About the Artist

Yujia Gu is a currently after her MFA in Graphic Design from CSULB. Gu is originally from China, but came to the US to further her degree. She has her undergrad from a university in China, but wished to get her MFA in the USA.

Formal Analysis

Gu’s artwork uses many elements of graphic design, all of which project a common theme – the gun violence in America that is overwhelming when compared to other countries. Gu uses many mixed media presentations to get this across, including video installations, as well as projections.

Synthesis / My Experience

Being in this gallery…ot just felt strange to see the statistics surrounding me. I grew up knowing that America has a huge issue with gun violence, but seeing Gu’s exhibition made it feel…more real, if that makes sense. To see the names and faces of those that were lost to gun violence next to projections of the actual weapons…its powerful.
